Vancouver Startup Database = Airtable + Open Street Map
When I came to Vancouver I was trying to figure out where I should live and one of the important pieces of information was where are all the companies located?
I did some research but couldn't we find a map of where all the startups were located.
Time pasted, and I've already settled in renting a house but I remembered that problem, and thought that it would be helpful to create such a database and map. I know that CrunchBase has a huge database which includes startups not only from Vancouver but all over the world. I've no intention to compete against CrunchBase but just want to create something useful for people in Vancouver and people who are interested in Vancouver.
So I pulled out Airtable to create a form so that people can use it to enter information regarding startups that they work or know. That was pretty straightforward.
Then I thought, it would be great to visually see where all these startups and tech companies are located on the Vancouver map. I was able to quickly link it to Google Maps but then I thought that with Google Maps it will be difficult to use the contents in other forms, such as copying an area of the map and pasting it on my blog. I didn't know any map service that was loyalty free so I asked a bunch of groups what they would recommend using. A lot of people told me that OpenStreetMap is an Open Source service that's the to use the information that is publicly displayed. I also found that there are a few other services that use OpenStreetMap.
Geolonia and Umap are some of them.
I'm currently stuck trying to import the data that is now in Airtable to the map service. I need more information around how the import file structure is specified.
So I will put the farm URL below so if you're interested in updating the database that will be great help!
