Video editing WeVideo → Descript

How video editing all started

Before even starting my YouTube channel, I have been using WeVideo. I watched a bunch of videos back in 2021 on YouTube to figure out what options I had to choose from. Thank you to Justin Brown! (I had watched this video in specific and tried out a lot of the editors that I could try.)

The great thing back then was WeVideo was simple to use, affordable and a web service. It was intuitive, quick to understand and had a lot of tutorial videos on YouTube in case you were stuck. WeVideo price plan will start from $10 which was much better than Adobe products such as Premier Pro which would cost $50 per month! And it was a web service. Why is that an advantage? You didn't have to have a high-spec computer to use it. Back then, I had been using an old Macbook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) that had 16Gb of memory but was getting quite slow. So WeVideo was great!

But then, WeVideo updated its interface and things changed... The new UI I eventually got used to but there were 2 things that made it difficult to use.

1. The time lag on the timeline

When I edit something I usually edit based on my narration. I often stumble on words so I would rephrase my line. I would need to find the exact editing point to split the video. But WeVideo had a weird thing of not showing the line (what do you call this?) on the timeline where it actually is. So you would have to look at the audio level and guess where you want to split the cut.

2. Uploading videos

Once you record a video you had to upload it. This is something unique about web services. But this would take DAYS! My house has an upload speed of 10-15 Mbps so uploading a 1 Gb would take 13 minutes. But no way! After waiting for 5 hours, it still won't complete. I would have to go to my office which has 40Mbps or so uploading speed and finally it would upload.

The search for AI video editors

So I started to search for new video editing software things all this AI software came about I thought it might be an interesting idea to find video editing software that used AI.

I came across Synthesia, D-ID, Wisecut and many, many more!!

I went to a bunch of these services to check out what functions they had, what the pricing was, etc.

But after using Descript for a while it was SO easy to edit videos.  The whole concept of editing videos not by looking at the timeline but by looking at the scripts that were automatically generated by AI with the audio was revolutionary. I could edit videos much faster and I realized I had so many filter words I was using. ( I say “like” and “like of”  a lot!!! Probably you have noticed in the past videos!)

In the script, you can find easily filler words and you can delete them automatically and which will be reflected on the timeline.  The video editing process changed, no more staring at the timeline!

I think I will actually create a video comparing the 2 editors so you can see how different they are.
